NRC recommends expansion of PSM programs

The National Research Council of the National Academies (NRC) is in favor of the Professional Science Master's (PSM) degree.

The PSM program was developed to allow graduate students to pursue their interests in math and sciences as well as obtain a sound knowledge of business and professional workspace environments. The NRC is now recommending that "policymakers, universities, and employers should work together to speed the development" of these PSM graduate programs.

The NRC developed a report that urges Congress to fund a graduate program at the National Science Foundation. The report also suggests that other major federal science agencies should foster the growth of these PSM programs. The NRC is labeling PSM programs as keys to America's economic competitiveness in the world market.
